1798 - Irish Rebellion of 1798 led by the United Irishmen against British rule begins.
1951 - Gardaí exchange shots with two men who try to bomb the British embassy in Dublin.
1956 - The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland
1993 - Microsoft unveils a a new line of Operating System, dubbed Windows NT (New Technology)
1999 - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands indicts Slobodan Miloševic and four others for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo.
2008 - Munster rugby team beat Toulouse 16-13 in the 2007–08 Heineken Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
2016 - Gareth Hutch, a nephew of Gerard 'The Monk' Hutch, is shot as he gets into his car at a Dublin flats complex and later dies from his injuries in hospital. His is the eighth death in the Hutch-Kinahan gangland feud.
