Meteorological Situation at 1500 : A strong to gale force southerly veering westerly airflow covers the area. A deep and complex area of low pressure near Iceland will direct an increasingly unstable west to southwest airflow over the country with frontal troughs crossing the country this evening and early tonight.

FORECAST FOR IRISH COASTAL WATERS FROM FAIR HEAD TO HOWTH HEAD TO CARNSORE POINT AND FOR THE IRISH SEA

Wind: West to southwest force 4 to 6. Increasing southwest force 6 or 7 and gusty imminent, locally gale force 8 at times in the Irish Sea. Soon veering westerly force 3 to 5, occasionally force 6. Later, increasing west to southwest force 5 or 6 and gusty.

Weather: Fair to cloudy with scattered showers and some mist patches. Showers becoming frequent, prolonged and heavy for a time later, with a chance of thunderstorms and hail.

Visibility: Reducing moderate or poor in precipitation and mist, otherwise good.


FORECAST FOR IRISH COASTAL WATERS FROM CARNSORE POINT TO ROCHES POINT TO MIZEN HEAD

Wind: West to southwest force 5 or 6. Increasing southwest force 6 or 7 and gusty imminent. Soon veering westerly force 5 to 7 and gusty. Increasing westerly force 6 or 7 later, reaching gale force 8 locally at times.

Weather: Fair to cloudy with scattered showers and some mist patches. Showers becoming frequent and heavy in the southwest imminent, and soon spreading eastwards, with a chance of thunderstorms and hail. Showers becoming more scattered again later.

Visibility: Reducing moderate or poor in precipitation and mist, otherwise good.


FORECAST FOR IRISH COASTAL WATERS FROM MIZEN HEAD TO ERRIS HEAD TO FAIR HEAD

Wind: South to southwest force 6 or gale force 7 and gusty, occasionally reaching gale force 8. Veering west to southwest force 6 or 7 imminent. Later west to southwest force 6 or 7, occasionally touching gale force 8 in the west. Veering west to northwest in the southwest later.

Weather: Heavy showers or longer spells of rain with a chance of thunderstorms and hail. Mist patches at first. Occasional wintry showers soon.

Visibility: Reducing moderate or poor in precipitation and mist.


Outlook for a further 24 hours until 18:00 Friday 23rd February 2024: Strong to near gale westerly winds, moderate or fresh at times in the east, but reaching gale force at times in the west and southwest. Squally showers, most frequent in the west, some heavy with hail and isolated thunderstorms.
